Getting married in Varenna

Varenna is a village on the eastern shore of Lake Como, in the province of Lecco, and it faces Bellagio across the water at the point where the lake divides into its two southern branches. It is small, with well under a thousand residents, and it is built on a slope: houses in ochre, pink and yellow step down towards the harbour along lanes and stairways. Most couples who choose the lake think first of the western shore and its grand villas. Varenna offers something else, a wedding in which guests arrive by train or by boat, everyone walks, and the ceremony, the garden and the dinner are all within one small area.

The village has a long memory. Its founding by local fishermen is dated to the year 769; it sided with Milan, was destroyed by Como in 1126, and later took in refugees from the Isola Comacina after that island suffered the same fate in 1169. The parish church of San Giorgio, in the square of the same name, was consecrated in 1313 and carries a large fresco of Saint Christopher on its façade, and the church of San Giovanni Battista is described as the oldest in the village. The two famous gardens began as very different places. Villa Monastero grew out of a Cistercian convent founded in the late twelfth century, which was closed in 1567 and became a private residence, while the buildings of Villa Cipressi date from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century and look over the lake through terraces lined with cypresses.

For a bride this adds up to a wedding day made of stone, water and green, with very little traffic and a lot of stairs. The dress, the veil and the shoes all have to be planned for the village as it is, and the hair and makeup have to stay put through ferry decks, garden paths, steps and a lake breeze. That planning is what this page is about.

Where weddings happen in Varenna

Varenna has two villa gardens that couples travel for, a town hall on a medieval square, lakeside hotels and a long walkway over the water. Each one asks something different of the hair and the makeup.

Villa Cipressi: terraces, a hotel and civil ceremonies

Villa Cipressi stands on the point of the village, with terraced gardens that run down to the lake and the lake was once the villa’s main entrance. In 1980 the people of Varenna bought it by public subscription, and it is now held by public bodies, among them the Comune di Varenna, and run as a hotel and restaurant. Lombardy’s tourism portal describes it as the village’s seat for civil wedding ceremonies, so a civil ceremony, the portraits in the garden and the dinner can all happen in one property. The registry office of the Comune confirms which room or terrace is available for your date and hour; the morning is counted back from that time.

Villa Monastero: loggia, tempietto and a garden along the shore

The botanical garden of Villa Monastero follows the shore for a long stretch, and the villa, now a museum house owned by the Province of Lecco, was a convent before it was a residence. Its own booking page offers ceremonies for small groups in the lakeside loggia, the neoclassical tempietto or the Sala Polvani, and says that the venue does not supply a celebrant and stays open to visitors, so other people will be in the garden while you photograph. That page describes symbolic ceremonies, so ask the Comune’s registry which place can host the legal rite. Couples can also arrive by water taxi at the villa’s small dock if it is requested when booking.

The Town Hall and Piazza San Giorgio

The Town Hall faces Piazza San Giorgio, the square of the parish church, and a civil ceremony there is a short walk from the lanes where most guests stay. The registry office agrees the date, the hour and the room, and the church and the square are close enough for a first portrait before or after the rite. The cobbled lanes and stairways around the square decide how long the walk from your room really takes, so Elena asks where you sleep before she writes the timeline.

Lakeside hotels and private villas

Several hotels face the water, among them Hotel Royal Victoria, Hotel du Lac and Hotel Villa Cipressi, and their rooms and terraces look over the lake. For a religious service the parish of San Giorgio sets the day and the hour. A symbolic ceremony, which carries no legal weight, can be held on a private villa terrace or a hotel garden. In every case the room where you get ready should have a shaded window and, if possible, a short way down to the ceremony.

The lovers’ walk and the old harbour

The Passeggiata degli Innamorati is a walkway over the water that runs from the landing stage to the village centre, and it is the place most couples choose for a first look or an evening portrait. During the day it is shared with day visitors arriving off the ferries. The quiet times are early morning and the end of the day, when the day visitors have gone and the light is low.

Above the village: Castello di Vezio

Above Varenna, in the neighbouring commune of Perledo, stands the medieval Castello di Vezio, with a watchtower, a panoramic terrace and one of the northernmost olive groves in the world. It is a place for photographs rather than for a ceremony. If you plan a session there, tell Elena, since the climb and the open terrace mean a touch-up before the first frame.

These are places where couples marry and take photographs in and around Varenna, not a list of Elena’s past jobs. If your ceremony is at another venue on the shore, the plan works the same way: write the venue and the time, and the morning is counted back from there.

Weekends from late spring to early autumn go first in a village this small, and the registry of the Comune agrees the date and the hour of a civil ceremony directly. If your date is fixed, ask Elena to check hers at the same time.

A village of stairs and ferries: how Varenna moves a wedding

The getting there is part of the day, and it changes the way the morning is built.

Varenna has its own railway station, Varenna-Esino, on the line that runs from Lecco towards Colico and Tirano. The station sits above the village, and the way down to the lakeside is on foot, along lanes that slope steeply to the water. Guests who come by train should expect to walk with their luggage, or to take a taxi, and a bride arriving the evening before should do the same: hand off the heavy cases and keep the dress for the car or the boat.

The other way in is the lake. Ferries connect Varenna with Bellagio, Menaggio and Cadenabbia, and the car ferries on that crossing carry vehicles as well as passengers. This is why so many wedding parties split between the two shores, with the bride getting ready on one side and the ceremony on the other. If you cross on the day, the boat timetable becomes the spine of the morning: Elena counts backwards from the sailing, not from the ceremony, and builds in a margin for the dock.

The centre is narrow, and large vehicles are limited at busy times, both in the historic centre and at the landing stage. Guest coaches and big vans need to be arranged with the venue and the Comune in advance. For a bride this means one thing: the last stretch to the ceremony is almost always on foot, over stone, sometimes with steps, and the hair and the veil are built for that walk.

The hair is made for movement. A low chignon, a braided base or waves pinned firmly at the neck stand up to stairs and boat decks better than a loose style, and the veil is anchored through the hair rather than perched on top, because a lake breeze lifts a veil first. The guide to getting married on Lake Como compares the shores, and the page on Lake Como weddings shows how the other towns work.

Mountain shade, morning wind and the afternoon sun on the water

The village sits on a slope with mountains behind it, and the light follows that shape.

Varenna looks west across the lake, with the slope rising behind it. In practice the early morning in the lanes can be shaded and cool, while the afternoon and the evening bring a long, low sun over the water. A trial and a plan should therefore be checked in two lights: a window in the morning, and the terrace you will actually stand on later. A base that looks right in soft shade can look flat in the open light of a late-afternoon ceremony, and the shade is adjusted for that.

The lake has its own wind rhythm. A gentle northerly, the Tivano, usually blows in the early morning and fades towards late morning, and the Breva, a stronger wind from the south, tends to pick up afterwards. For a bride on a terrace or a ferry deck this is a hair question first: loose strands, a veil that lifts, a headpiece that tugs. The look is built to stay put, and a spare set of pins and a small touch-up kit travel with you.

Humidity matters in a place surrounded by water and steep gardens. In the warm months the air by the lake is soft and the stone holds heat, and a base that is set in thin layers, with powder placed where it is needed rather than everywhere, stays even from the first photograph to the last. The notes on wedding makeup in hot weather explain what holds up in July and August, and in spring and autumn the same base is chosen on warmer undertones so the skin does not look cold under a grey sky.

The gardens also change with the season. Camellias and azaleas flower in spring, wisteria covers the pergola of Villa Cipressi, and hydrangeas and roses follow in summer. The lip and cheek colour is chosen against the flowers and the bouquet you will be carrying, not in the abstract.

The Varenna wedding morning, hour by hour

A worked example shows how the timeline is counted back from the moment you leave the room.

Imagine a late-afternoon civil ceremony in a garden terrace, with a dinner in the same property. The ceremony hour is the first fixed point. Behind it come the walk from the room, the arrival of the photographer, and the first look if you have chosen one. Elena works backwards from the moment you have to step out, and the plan is sent to you in writing in the first reply, with start times for each person.

Mothers and bridesmaids come first, the bride last, so that your base is the freshest thing in the room when you leave it. If you are getting ready in a hotel, the room should have natural light, a table near the window and enough space for a mirror and a chair. If the ceremony is across the lake, add the crossing and the walk at the other end, and the plan gets an earlier start.

A morning ceremony is built differently. The Tivano is still blowing, the lanes are shaded and the light on the water is soft, so the base can be a little warmer and the eyes a little more defined. For an evening ceremony the opposite applies: the sun is low and golden, and the makeup should look warm in that light and still hold in flash at the dinner. In both cases, the notes on wedding guest makeup in Italy help the rest of the party prepare.

Gardens, day visitors and the photographs between ceremony and dinner

In Varenna the photographs are part of the plan, not an afterthought. The two garden villas, the lovers’ walk and the old harbour are all close together, and a photographer can cover them in one session, but the crowds follow the same route. Day visitors arrive by ferry from mid-morning, and Villa Monastero, which stays open to visitors, has other people in the garden while you pose. Early morning and the last hour before sunset are the quiet times, and the light is the best then too.

The consequence for the makeup is simple. The look has to survive a long gap between the ceremony and the dinner, and it has to be touched up quickly, in a room or on a bench, with a small kit. Elena builds the lips in a formula that survives a toast and a kiss, sets the base so it does not shine under the sun that comes off the water, and tells you what to carry in your bag. If you plan a longer session, tell her, so the schedule includes a break for the touch-up.

For couples who prefer something smaller, a symbolic ceremony on a terrace or in a loggia, followed by a quiet dinner, is the wedding that fits this village best. The guide to civil weddings in Italy explains how the legal side works for couples from abroad, and the same morning plan applies to a ceremony of two or of thirty.

A trial the day before, or no trial

Both work. The choice depends on where you live and how much you want to see in advance.

A trial is a full run of the look: base, eyes, lips, hair and the veil. If you are travelling to Varenna, it can be done the day before the ceremony, in your room, once you have arrived, so there is no extra trip. You see the look in the light you will be married in, and anything you want changed is changed that afternoon, with a whole day left.

If you live closer, or would rather not, you can skip it. Before the wedding Elena goes through photographs with you, your dress, your hair as it is, the makeup you wear and the makeup you like on others, and builds the look from them. The article on what happens at a bridal makeup trial explains what to bring, and planning bridal makeup from abroad is written for couples who arrive from another country.

Elena isn't just a makeup specialist, her skill goes beyond, to create a flawless wedding look to carry the bridge through the happiest day of her life. I was lucky to meet Elena ahead of time, so we had time for the trial makeup and hairstyle and my eyebrows were also taken care of by her, so that on the wedding day there was not a single detail in disarray in my look! I also asked a lot of questions about single makeup color or the hairstyle choices (eye shadow, lipstick, accessories etc.) and got exhaustive educated explanation, which added to the confidence of each choice and even helped to connect together some other pieces of the look.

Very much recommend as a stylist, a makeup artist, eyebrow/eyelashes master and, I'm sure, anything else Elena gets her golden hands on!

Frequently asked questions

Do you work as a wedding makeup artist in Varenna?

Yes. Elena is based in Veneto and travels to Varenna for weddings, including couples who fly in from abroad. She comes to your hotel, villa or lakeside room with the full kit and does hair and makeup in one session.

Can you do hair and makeup for a civil ceremony at Villa Cipressi?

Yes. Write the date, the place where you are getting ready and the ceremony time, and Elena will tell you whether the date is free. The registry of the Comune di Varenna confirms the room and the hour, and the look is built for a ceremony and for a long day of photographs in the garden.

Can you work at Villa Monastero?

Elena can come to wherever you are getting ready, whether that is a hotel room or a villa, and be with you before a ceremony at Villa Monastero. The villa stays open to visitors and sets its own booking terms, so ask it directly about your slot, and tell Elena the hour of the ceremony and the photographs.

How early should hair and makeup start on the wedding morning?

That depends on the ceremony time, the number of people being styled and the way from your room to the venue, on foot or by boat. The morning is counted back from the moment you have to leave, and the plan is written down for you in the first reply.

We are arriving by train or ferry. Is that a problem?

No, but it changes the plan. The station is above the village and the lanes down to the lake are steep, so luggage and the dress are handled with care. If you cross by ferry on the day, the boat timetable becomes the first fixed point of the morning.

Do I need a trial, or can I book without one?

Either works. For couples travelling to Varenna a trial can be done the day before the ceremony, in your room, so there is no extra trip. Without a trial Elena works from photographs of your dress, your hair and the makeup you like.

Will hair and makeup survive the wind, the heat and the stairs?

Yes, if they are built for it. The base is set in thin layers so it stays even in reflected light, the lips are chosen for a long day, and the hair is built on structure with the veil anchored through it, so ferry decks, lake breezes and steps do not undo it.

Can you also do my mother and bridesmaids in Varenna?

Yes. Everyone is planned into the same morning in the order the day needs them, and the bride is finished last. The number of people sets the start time, so tell Elena when you write.

Is Varenna good for a small wedding or an elopement?

It is. The villas, the church square and the lovers’ walk are within one small area, guests arrive without a car, and a ceremony for two or for a few guests fits the village well. Elena also works at elopements and at photoshoots around the lake.

When should I book if I am marrying on Lake Como?

As soon as the date and the venue are fixed. The weekends from late spring to early autumn go first, and it costs nothing to ask Elena to check your date while you plan the rest.
