Elena comes to your hotel, villa or apartment in Menaggio and does bridal hair and makeup in one morning, timed to your ceremony, the ferry timetable and the afternoon wind on the water.

Menaggio sits on the western shore of Lake Como, on a small promontory where the lake opens towards Bellagio and Varenna. A little over three thousand people live here, spread over the centre and three hamlets, Croce, Loveno and Nobiallo. It works as a wedding base in a different way from the villa towns around it: the lakefront is a nineteenth-century promenade lined with hotels, the old town climbs behind it in steep cobbled lanes, the main square, Piazza Garibaldi, is the hub of the centre, and the boats leave from a landing close to it. Much of a wedding weekend can be done on foot and by water.
The town is older than its hotels. The Roman road known as the Via Regina ran through here, and medieval Menaggio was a fortified village around a castle on the hill above the Senagra stream. The castle was destroyed in 1523 during raids by the Grisons, and its ruins still stand above the town. The sculptor Leone Leoni was born in Menaggio in 1509. Large hotels went up later, drawn by the cool summer climate, and English visitors came with them: the Menaggio and Cadenabbia Golf Club on the hill in Croce was founded in 1907.
The climate is mild and steady, softened by the lake and by two daily winds that have their own names, and the weekend tends to stretch beyond the ceremony: a welcome dinner in the square, a day on the water, a walk up to the hills. The sections below explain how that rhythm shapes the wedding morning.

Hotels, churches and the town hall: the settings in Menaggio
Menaggio has lakefront grand hotels, a Comune that handles civil ceremonies, old churches and a promenade for the photographs. Each asks something different of the hair and the makeup.
The Comune and the civil ceremony
Civil weddings are handled by the Comune di Menaggio. Its website lists civil marriage among the registry services (anagrafe e stato civile), next to a separate service for the banns, and it publishes a regulation for civil celebrations and a request form for Italian citizens. The rooms on offer, the days and hours, and the municipal fee are set in that regulation and can change, so ask the registry before you fix anything else. The first thing to learn is which room you are given and how many guests it holds, because that decides how many people are waiting before the ceremony and how early everyone has to be ready.
Grand Hotel Menaggio, on the lakefront
The hotel stands directly on the lake, with Bellagio on the opposite shore, a lakeside garden, a terrace, two restaurant rooms, Sala Clio and La Veranda, and its own landing stage for boats. A wedding directory lists a ceremony on site among its services. A hotel is the simplest setting for the morning: the room where you get ready, the terrace and the reception are under one roof, and the timeline has no transfer in it. If you hope for a civil ceremony in the garden, the Comune has to allow that place, so ask the registry first.
Grand Hotel Victoria, a villa and a palazzo
A late nineteenth-century villa that took in aristocratic families in the belle époque, reopened as the Grand Hotel Victoria Concept & Spa after a restoration of about two years. Today the Villa and a Palazzo are joined by a covered corridor, some rooms look towards Bellagio and Varenna, and the hotel’s own website has a section for weddings and events. For hair and makeup the useful detail is the choice of rooms: a quiet room with a garden window gives better morning light than a lake balcony in full sun.
Santo Stefano and the old churches
For a Catholic wedding, the parish church of Santo Stefano, remodelled in the seventeenth century, is the main church of the old town. Santa Marta, documented since 1582, has a neo-Gothic façade, San Carlo is a Baroque church in the walled upper town, and the polygonal sanctuary of the Madonna della Pace in Nobiallo was built in 1660. Church services follow the parish timetable, so the morning is counted back from the hour the parish gives you, and the parish office is the one to ask which church takes weddings.
Villa Vigoni and its park, a landmark
In Loveno, on the hillside, Villa Vigoni was bought in 1829 by the Frankfurt-born businessman Heinrich Mylius as a wedding present for his son. Its English-style park was reshaped between 1855 and 1865 and is counted among the best-preserved romantic gardens in Lombardy. The villa now belongs to the German state and houses a German-Italian centre for European dialogue; its website does not mention wedding hire, so treat it as a landmark and ask its secretariat before building a plan around it.
The promenade, Piazza Garibaldi and the old town
The tree-lined lakeside walk runs along Viale Benedetto Castelli and Via dei Cipressi and crosses the Senagra on an old footbridge; from it you see Bellagio and, further off, the castle of Vezio. Piazza Garibaldi is where the old town meets the water. These are the places for portraits, early in the morning or in the last hour before sunset, when the promenade is quieter and the light is soft.
The golf club in Croce
The Menaggio and Cadenabbia Golf Club, founded in 1907, sits on the hill above the town, and its clubhouse is a hillside manor house. It is a members’ sports club, so whether it takes private events, or allows photographs on the course, is for the club to say.
These are places where couples marry or celebrate in and around Menaggio, not a list of Elena’s past jobs. If your ceremony is at a villa in Tremezzina or a hotel in Bellagio, the plan works the same way: write the venue and the time, and the morning is counted back from there.
Summer weekends on this stretch of the lake go early, and the registry sets the dates and hours for civil ceremonies itself. If your date is fixed, ask Elena to check hers at the same time as you write to the Comune.
Ferries, piers and timetables: how a Menaggio wedding moves
Menaggio is one of the four ports of the central-lake ferry shuttle, and that is the first thing to plan around.
The ferry company runs a shuttle between Menaggio, Bellagio, Varenna and Cadenabbia, with separate timetables for working days and for holidays, and some sailings are marked passengers only. For guests this is a gift: friends who sleep in Bellagio or Varenna can cross for the ceremony, and a boat in the evening is a normal way to get home. For the bride it is a constraint to write into the morning: the ferry leaves when the timetable says, not when the veil is ready.
So the first question is where you are getting ready. If it is in Menaggio, the timeline starts at your own door and the only clock is the ceremony. If it is on the other shore, in Bellagio or Varenna, or at a villa further along the western shore, the crossing, the walk from the pier and a margin for a late sailing go into the plan before anything else, and Elena counts the makeup and hair backwards from the sailing you will take. Check the timetable for your actual date.
Elena comes to wherever you are getting ready, with the complete kit; she needs a window with soft daylight, a table, a socket and a chair. If you are choosing between places on the lake, the pages for Bellagio and Varenna describe the other side of the crossing, and the one for Tremezzo covers the villas along the same shore.
Start with the registry: planning a civil ceremony in Menaggio
Start with the Comune, not the hotel. The registry office of the Comune di Menaggio handles the banns and the civil celebration, and the town publishes its own regulation for civil ceremonies. Before you fix anything else, ask five things: which rooms can be used, whether a ceremony outside the Comune’s own rooms is possible at all, on which days and at which hours the registry celebrates, what the fee is, and how far ahead the request must be made.
Couples marrying in Italy from abroad also need paperwork from their own country, and the order of the steps matters. The guide to civil weddings in Italy explains how the process works. Once the registry gives you a day and an hour, send both to Elena, together with the place where you are getting ready, and you will know the same day whether her date is free.
Tivano in the morning, Breva after lunch: wind, haze and light on this shore
Lake Como has a daily wind system with local names, and it is worth knowing before you choose the hour of the ceremony.
Tivano is a gentle northerly that comes down the lake in the early morning and usually fades by late morning. Breva is the southerly that takes over, setting in from late morning or early afternoon and strongest around the central lake, where Menaggio stands near the point at which the three arms of the lake meet. A deep haze over the water in the late morning often comes before a Breva. The practical result: mornings are often calm and afternoons breezy, which matters for a terrace ceremony at four.
For the hair this means structure. A low chignon, a braided base or waves pinned firmly where they meet the neck hold in a breeze, and the veil is anchored through the hair rather than perched on top, because a southerly lifts a veil first. Fine hair is given texture before it is pinned, so the pins have something to hold.
The light follows the geography. The lakefront looks east and south-east, towards Bellagio and Varenna, so the morning sun lands on the water and the façades, while the mountains behind the town take the evening light earlier than on the opposite shore. Light bounced up from the water brightens the face from below, so the base is built in thin layers and set, with highlighter kept small. In July and August the notes on wedding makeup in hot weather explain what holds; in spring and autumn the haze can make skin look cold, so the shade is checked at a window in daylight and built on warm undertones.
Getting ready in Menaggio: the order of the room
The first decision is the room. A shaded window is better than a sunny balcony, because skin that is comfortable at nine in the morning has to look the same at six in the evening. If you can, ask the hotel for a second room for the family, so the bride’s room stays quiet.
The order is the same whether you are in a grand hotel or a rented apartment in the old town. Mothers and bridesmaids go first and the bride last, so that your base is the freshest thing in the room when you step out. Skin preparation comes first, then the base, then the eyes, then the hair and the veil, and the lips are finished at the end and kept in the bag for touch-ups.
The timeline is counted backwards from the moment you have to leave: the walk to the registry or the church, the transfer to a villa, or the sailing you will take. If the ceremony is in the centre, the walk through the old town is part of the plan, and a hem that touches cobbles needs a margin. Elena sends the written plan in the first reply.
Cobbles, steps and a castle hill: where the photographs go
Menaggio gives photographers three backgrounds within a short walk: the lakefront with the water and the view to the opposite shore, the upper town with its steep cobbled lanes, and the hill that carries the castle ruins over the Senagra stream, with the Val Sanagra park close by.
Each background asks something of the look. On the promenade the light is wide and reflected, and the base has to stay even. In the lanes shade and bright patches alternate, so the shade is tested in daylight before the day. On the hill the walk raises colour in the face and loosens the hair, so the pins are chosen for movement. Heels and a long train do not suit cobbles, which is a conversation to have with the photographer.
If you plan photographs in the park of Villa Vigoni or at the golf club, both have their own rules, so ask first. Tell Elena where the photographs are and at what hour, and she will tell you what to carry for touch-ups on that walk: blotting paper, a small powder, the lip colour and a few pins.
A trial the day before, or no trial
A trial is a full run of the look: base, eyes, lips, hair and the veil. If you are travelling to Menaggio, it can be done the day before the ceremony, in your room, once you have arrived. There is no extra trip, you see the look in the daylight that will be there the next day, and anything you want changed is changed that afternoon, with a full day left.
If you live nearby or would rather not, you can skip it. Before the wedding Elena goes through photographs with you, your dress, your hair as it is, the makeup you wear and the makeup you like on others, and builds the look from them.
Welcome dinners, guitar nights and the weekend around the wedding
Menaggio works for a long weekend: a welcome dinner on the lakefront, the ceremony the next day, a day on the boat, and a walk in the hills. Local press reported in 2022 that the Comune had tried out pre-wedding dinners in Via Calvi and on part of Piazza Garibaldi, for couples marrying at villas elsewhere on the lake, with the rules still to be written; if you hope to dine in the street, ask the Comune.
The town also keeps a calendar of its own. An international guitar festival has been held in late August for years, so check the dates before you choose a weekend in the high season. Elena works at weddings and at the events around them, including engagement sessions, welcome dinners, evening parties and photoshoots on the promenade or in the old town.
She is based in Veneto and travels to Menaggio for weddings, including couples who fly in. For the whole lake, see weddings on Lake Como, and for a wedding that starts or ends in the city, the page for Como. Write the date, the place where you are getting ready and the ceremony time in your message, and you will know the same day whether the date is free.
Seasons on the western shore
The usual wedding season on the lake runs from spring to early autumn. In spring the gardens are green and a shower is possible. In high summer the mornings are calm, the afternoons breezy and the lake adds humidity to the heat, so the makeup is built to be set and the lips chosen for a long day. In autumn the days are short and the mountains take the sun early, so a ceremony is better placed in the afternoon than at dusk. Check your hotel’s opening dates for the shoulder months, and plan a covered alternative, as you would anywhere on the lake.

Elena isn't just a makeup specialist, her skill goes beyond, to create a flawless wedding look to carry the bridge through the happiest day of her life. I was lucky to meet Elena ahead of time, so we had time for the trial makeup and hairstyle and my eyebrows were also taken care of by her, so that on the wedding day there was not a single detail in disarray in my look! I also asked a lot of questions about single makeup color or the hairstyle choices (eye shadow, lipstick, accessories etc.) and got exhaustive educated explanation, which added to the confidence of each choice and even helped to connect together some other pieces of the look.
Very much recommend as a stylist, a makeup artist, eyebrow/eyelashes master and, I'm sure, anything else Elena gets her golden hands on!

Frequently asked questions
Do you work as a wedding makeup artist in Menaggio?
Yes. Elena is based in Veneto and travels to Menaggio for weddings, including couples who fly in from abroad. She comes to your hotel, villa or apartment with the full kit and does hair and makeup in one session.
Where do civil weddings take place in Menaggio?
That is set by the Comune di Menaggio. Its registry handles the banns and the civil celebration and publishes a regulation, so the rooms, the days and the hours come from the registry, not from Elena or the hotel. Once you have the hour, send it to Elena and the morning is counted back from there.
Can you do hair and makeup at Grand Hotel Menaggio or Grand Hotel Victoria?
Yes. Elena comes to any hotel where you are getting ready. Write the date, the hotel and the ceremony time, and she will tell you whether the date is free.
Will the Breva wind ruin my hair or lift my veil?
It will not if the hair is built for it. The Breva usually sets in from late morning or early afternoon, so Elena builds the hair on structure, a low chignon, a braided base or waves pinned at the neck, and anchors the veil through the hair rather than on top.
I am getting ready in Bellagio or Varenna and marrying in Menaggio. How does the ferry fit in?
The crossing becomes the first item in the timeline. The morning is counted back from the sailing you will take, with a margin for a late departure, and the ferry runs different timetables for working days and for holidays, so check the one for your date.
How early should hair and makeup start on the wedding morning?
That depends on the ceremony time, the number of people being styled and the walk or the crossing from your room. The morning is counted back from the moment you have to leave, and the plan is written down for you in the first reply.
Do I need a trial, or can I book without one?
Either works. For couples travelling to Menaggio a trial can be done the day before the ceremony, in your room, so there is no extra trip. Without a trial Elena works from photographs of your dress, your hair and the makeup you like.
Will the makeup hold up in the heat and the light off the water?
Yes, if it is built for them. The base is set in thin layers so it stays even in reflected light, the lips are chosen for a long day, and the hair is built on structure with the veil anchored through it.
Can you also do my mother and bridesmaids in Menaggio?
Yes. Everyone is planned into the same morning in the order the day needs them, and the bride is finished last. The number of people sets the start time, so tell Elena when you write.
Do you do makeup for a welcome dinner, an engagement session or a photoshoot on the lakefront?
Yes. Elena works at weddings and at the events around them, engagement sessions, welcome dinners, evening parties and photoshoots on the promenade or in the old town. Tell her the time and the light you expect.
When should I book if I am marrying on Lake Como?
As soon as the date and the venue are fixed. The Saturdays from late spring to early autumn go first, and it costs nothing to ask Elena to check your date while you plan the rest.
