Getting married at Lake Maggiore

Quieter and less crowded than Lake Como, Lake Maggiore still offers the same Italian lake glamour — grand belle époque villas, botanical gardens, and the famous Borromean Islands rising out of the water. Couples are drawn to its medieval towns along the Piedmont shore around Stresa and Verbania, to the dramatic palazzo terraces of Isola Bella, and to the relative privacy that a quieter lake affords compared to its more famous neighbours. Whether you're exchanging vows on an island terrace or dancing under the stars at a lakeside villa, Lake Maggiore offers a backdrop that feels both grand and intimate.

For mothers of the bride, bridesmaids and guests getting ready on Lake Maggiore, there is a separate guide to wedding guest makeup — including how to time the appointment when the hotel is on one shore and the ceremony on the other.

The crossing to Isola Bella takes about ten minutes by private boat — ten minutes of open lake air on a style that still has to hold for the ceremony, so it gets tested at the trial, not discovered on the water.

Hair and makeup as a single booking

Maggiore is the lake where the getting-ready room and the ceremony are often not on the same shore. A boat transfer sits in the middle of your morning, which means the look has to survive the crossing and still be finished when you arrive — not touched up by two different people at two different moments.

Bridal hair

Updos, half-up styles and waves built for your own hair texture, with the hold planned around a transfer rather than around a straight walk downstairs.

Veil and hairpieces

Veils and a boat crossing need a decision, not a hope. Placement and pinning are tested at the trial with the actual accessories you will wear.

Island and shoreline

Ceremonies on Isola Bella and the Borromean islands mean open water on both sides. That changes what holds, and the products are chosen accordingly.

Where Lake Maggiore weddings actually happen

Almost every Maggiore wedding sits on one of two sides of a boat crossing — the shore where you get ready, and the island or shoreline villa where you marry.

Stresa and the shore

Grand Hotel des Iles Borromées and Hotel Villa e Palazzo Aminta are the usual getting-ready base. For the ceremony itself the Comune di Stresa lists Villa Muggia and Villa Frua, either for the ceremony alone or with a reception, and the Sala del Sindaco in the town hall, an indoor room with lake views for about thirty. Stresa is also the boat departure point for the islands.

The Borromean Islands

Isola Bella, Isola Madre and the smaller Isola dei Pescatori sit a short private-boat crossing from Stresa. Ceremonies on the islands mean open water on the way there and, usually, on the way back for photographs too.

Verbania and Pallanza

Across the gulf the Comune di Verbania celebrates civil weddings in Villa Giulia, on a top-floor terrace or on the lawn above the lake (the covered terrace is the wind-exposed fallback), and in the Sede Municipale, Villa Maioni and the Museo del Paesaggio. Grand Hotel Majestic and Villa Rusconi-Clerici, with its English garden facing the Borromean Gulf, host receptions in Pallanza.

Arona, Dormelletto and Angera

At the southern end the Rocca Borromea of Arona is a civil venue under a municipal regulation, with the Casa Comunale as the indoor alternative. Villa Donna Giusi in Dormelletto has a room for civil ceremonies and a flat park, and on the Lombardy shore the Rocca Borromeo di Angera offers frescoed halls, courtyards and a medieval garden.

Laveno and the eastern shore

Villa Frascoli in Laveno-Mombello, a 1920s Liberty villa with panoramic terraces over the gulf, and Villa Garini e Cà Bianchetti in Ceresolo, where guests can arrive by boat from a lake landing, host weddings on the eastern shore. Reaching them from Stresa means a ferry crossing or the long way round by road.

I name these venues because they shape the crossing and the timing, not because you have to be marrying at one of them, and they are places where couples marry, not a list of my past work.

Frequently asked questions

Do you travel to Lake Maggiore for weddings?

Yes. Elena is based in Veneto and travels to Lake Maggiore for the wedding day, including island venues such as Isola Bella and Isola Madre, and for the trial too if it fits well into your schedule.

How far in advance should I book wedding makeup at Lake Maggiore?

As early as possible once your date is confirmed. Villa and island venues around Stresa fill up quickly during the Italian wedding season, which runs roughly from spring through autumn, so booking early is the best way to secure your day.

Will my makeup and hair survive a boat transfer to an island ceremony?

Yes. If your ceremony involves a boat crossing to Isola Bella or another island venue, Elena plans for wind and lake air with humidity-resistant, long-wear products and a hairstyle secure enough to hold through the crossing.

Our wedding is in Verbania or Arona, not Stresa. Does that change the plan?

Yes, because each shore has its own rooms and its own distances. Villa Giulia in Verbania, the Rocca Borromea in Arona and the villas on the eastern shore are not a short walk from a Stresa hotel, and a ferry has a timetable. Elena counts the timeline back from the moment the bride must leave the room, includes the crossing or the drive, and sends it in advance.

Do you offer a trial before the wedding?

Yes, a personalized trial is recommended beforehand, so your look is refined ahead of time and exactly right when it matters most on the wedding day.

Our getting-ready room is at Grand Hotel des Iles Borromées. How does the ceremony transfer work?

Most brides staying in Stresa get ready at the hotel and take a short private boat crossing to Isola Bella or Isola Madre for the ceremony, so the hairstyle is built to survive ten minutes of open lake air right after it's finished, not just to look right in the room.
