Sirmione is a narrow peninsula that reaches far out into the southern end of Lake Garda, with water on both sides and a medieval castle guarding the only way in. Couples choose it for exactly that picture: a Scaliger fortress behind a moat at the gate, stone lanes beyond it, lake light at every turn, and an olive grove at the far end where the Roman ruins of the Grotte di Catullo look over the water.
The castle, the Rocca Scaligera, was begun in 1277 by Mastino I della Scala and still stands behind its moat, entered over drawbridges. Inside the old town you find the small church of Sant’Anna della Rocca beside the castle, the late fifteenth-century church of Santa Maria Maggiore in the centre, and the lakeshore on both sides. At the tip of the peninsula the Grotte di Catullo are the remains of a large Roman villa from the Augustan age, standing in an olive grove of about fifteen hundred trees, some of them four or five hundred years old. It was never Catullus’s own house, which is a common mix-up, but the name stuck, and the site and its small museum are still the best-known viewpoint on the peninsula.
Sirmione has long been known for its thermal baths too, and some brides book an afternoon there with their friends before the wedding. Weddings here run from spring into autumn, and because the town is small most of a wedding day fits within walking distance: the getting-ready room, the ceremony, the photographs and the dinner are close together, which helps when the schedule is tight.

The Comune di Sirmione celebrates civil weddings at Palazzo Callas, a seventeenth-century palace on the main square of the historic centre. Both work. The choice depends on where you live and how much you want to see in advance.
A trial is a full run of the look: base, eyes, lips, hair and the veil. For couples travelling to Sirmione it can be done the day before the ceremony, in your room, once you have arrived, so there is no extra trip. You see the look in the same light you will be married in, and anything you want changed is changed that afternoon, with a whole day left to settle it.
If you live closer, or would rather not, you can skip the trial. Before the wedding we go through photographs together: your dress, your hair in its natural state, the makeup you wear and the makeup you love on other people, and Elena builds the look from that. This works well when your style is clear; a trial is the safer way if you want to see it first.
