Few places sell "destination wedding" as effortlessly as the Amalfi Coast. Pastel villages stacked into cliffs, lemon groves, and the Tyrrhenian Sea dropping away beneath a terrace ceremony — it's a setting that does most of the visual work for you. It's also become one of the most requested Italian destinations among American and British couples specifically, alongside Lake Como and Tuscany, and for good reason: nowhere else in Italy pairs quite that combination of drama and romance in a single frame.
Why Couples Choose the Amalfi Coast
Positano, Ravello and Praiano each offer a slightly different version of the same appeal. Positano is the postcard — steep, colourful, right on the water. Ravello sits higher up, quieter and more formal, with villa gardens like Villa Cimbrone looking straight out over the coastline. Praiano and the towns between them offer something a little less crowded, often at a lower cost, without losing the view. Most couples choose based on how many guests are travelling and how much walking (or boat transferring) between venues they're willing to plan around.
Best Time of Year to Marry on the Amalfi Coast
Late May, June, September and early October are the sweet spot — warm enough for an evening terrace reception, without the peak-August crowds and heat that the coast is genuinely known for. July and August bring both intense sun and the busiest tourist season on the coast road, which affects everything from vendor travel times to venue availability. If you have flexibility, shifting even two or three weeks outside of peak summer makes a noticeable difference to both comfort and logistics.
Planning Bridal Beauty for a Coastal Wedding
The Amalfi Coast is beautiful and genuinely demanding on makeup and hair: full sun, sea humidity, and — especially on a cliffside terrace — a fair amount of wind. This is close cousin territory to what I cover in my guide to making bridal makeup last through an Italian summer, with one extra factor added on top: wind off the water, which makes a very loose or undone hairstyle risky for a ceremony on an open terrace. A style with real structure underneath — even if it reads as soft and romantic — holds up far better than something that looks perfect only in a still photo.
If your day includes a boat transfer between towns, which many Amalfi weddings do, plan your timeline so hair and makeup are finished with a buffer before boarding, not right up against it — sea spray and wind are far easier to touch up for than to redo from scratch.
Amalfi, Lake Como or Tuscany?
All three are classic Italian destination settings, but they suit different weddings. Amalfi is dramatic and vertical — think cliffside terraces and sea views. Lake Como is polished and calm. Tuscany is pastoral, rolling hills rather than coastline. If you're still deciding between regions, my season-by-season guide to getting married in Italy walks through how the timing changes depending on where you land.
A Few Practical Tips
- Book coastal venues at least a year out — Positano and Ravello fill quickly for May, June, September and October dates.
- Plan hair with structure underneath, not just a loose style, if your ceremony is on an open cliffside terrace.
- Build a buffer into your timeline before any boat transfer between towns.
- If you're travelling from abroad, schedule your trial with enough lead time to fine-tune your look — see my guide to bridal makeup trials for how to plan around that.
- Confirm your artist's travel and accommodation logistics early; the coast road can add real time to any transfer between towns.
